A tech enabled family social app, a kinship space

We Care developed a one-of-a-kind family social app, which helps to align and strengthen family bonds.
We Care can benefit all family members, including children of aging parents, to keep up to date with their health statistics and the whereabouts of their parents in real time. Simultaneously, our We Care app supports the older generation to have a happier, longer, and more fulfilling life by providing meaningful connections with the family they are craving.
In short, our We Care app can help people of all ages to improve their family relations and overall well-being.

While We Care integrates basic health data in a non-invasive way with the help of advanced technology. Working class people or even students studying abroad will never need to:
1. Worry whether their parents are doing well or being active at home
2. Missed any calls or messages in the WhatsApp family group
3. Start the heavy health conversation with parents or nagging
4. Remind parents to go for their medical check-ups
5. Remember to host a family gathering such as Father’s / Mother’s Day / Xmas / Birthday celebration, and more!
6. Scavenge important messages and meaningful photos/videos within the WhatsApp family group

We Care key product features:
1. Improve Communication and Family Inner Circle Support: A digital kinship space designed for verified family members to build and improve communication, such as group chat, videos, photos storage, sending future messages, etc.
2. Improve Overall Well-Being: The app enables real-time monitoring of the activity status and the safety of the elderly, which is displayed on the app via data integration with existing platforms such as Apple Health and Google Fit.
3. Health Insight: The platform links with self-test medical devices (glucometer and blood pressure monitor) to record data for the parent’s key health indicators. Doing so will help adjust dietary requirements and lifestyle changes according to the recorded data.
4. Events Reminder: Family members no longer need to miss any important dates within their family’s events such as birthday parties, Christmas dinner, weekend BBQ, or even daily medicine intake or an upcoming medical check-up.

Founders

Founders have known each other for 7 years from BNI.
We started working on a software development project together which is a home security IoT platform on our first encounter. The project was delivered successfully and the client was satisfied.
We met up initially to discuss about the development of an App for family care. The lunch meeting was scheduled immediately (within 2 hours) after a phone call about this. Both founders resonate with the vision and we have decided to kickstart this project as a team.

Progress

We have completed the MVP and the product will be launched in early September.
We have developed Android and iOS applications. We are using AWS serverless architecture as it is secure and scalable.
The parents' health data is securely accessed from their Mobile and stored in the cloud.
MVP is available for Internal Testing now.

Sam has been working on this for 6 months as part-time and turned it into full-time months ago.
Vishnu has been working on the projects full-time for 3 months.

There are a few significant changes since last application.
- the additional of a CTO in the team
- product has been developed and launched

Idea

We aim to change how family communicates nowadays.
We always feel that families deserve a supportive social circle while having their own space. Any social media platform these days does not provide a separate digital space just for the family. We are constantly distracted by messages/calls/scrolls from our phones. Hence, We Care decided to build a digital kinship space, where all the family members can be together in one place and at peace.
With an intensive survey conducted, our findings suggested the benefit of real-time monitoring health and activity data on this product, which can help alert users about the well-being of their family members in a non-invasive way. No privacy compromised!

Millennials have a very tight schedule and it is hard to find enough time to spend with their parents. Even keeping in touch with them and being up to date with their everyday life like activity and health is challenging. They seek a platform or an app where they can overview this data and where they can see their beloved parents between personal visits.
The app saves them time overseeing their activities so that they can spend quality time together with their families/parents. The parents have a hard time motivating themselves to stay healthy. That is why their children need to encourage their parents in doing more such as simple exercises together. However, they want to care but don’t know how, or don’t have enough information to do so.

To make this product a successful one, the team needs all the below. And for sure, we trust that we are the ones committed to polishing all these skills from time to time.
1. Technology Advocator
2. IoT Home Care Devices
3. Social App Platform
4. Elderly Care Experience
5. Family-Oriented Entrepreneur
6. Continuous Learning Mindset

The founder has 10+ experience in neighborhood social platforms, as well as IoT Connected Home and Smart Security coupled with a good understanding of both consumers and how subscription model and platform monetization work.
Sam just led an $ 8 million Series A round for a Prop-tech start-up in 2021 and founded Energeek in 2011, which is incubated under Youth Business Singapore and NTU IDEASINC.

Co-Founder, Vishnu, who has 15 years in building world-class software and hardware products is passionate about solving real-life problems with technology. He is seasoned in hospital management systems, sensors, and integrations with Bluetooth medical devices. He has worked for Nvidia, Honeywell, Samsung, and Continental during his career.
Both founders are very family oriented and value family relationships.

We Care is currently uncontested on the market being the only application focusing on family connections that covers the 3 aspects: support, safety, and health.
1. Support: Handyman, Butler Services, Communication, Store Photos, Videos.
2. Safety: Detect Fall, Intruder, Not Returning home, Fire Alarm.
3. Healthcare: Dementia, Depression, Blood Sugar, Pressure, Heart Rate.

There are "Friends" within a similar industry.
For instance, Kin, Oscar Family, and Papa are platforms very focused on supporting elderly daily life care. While for safety, Life360, Snug Safety, and Senior Safety are the Apps providing safety monitoring.
From a healthcare perspective, Mysugr, Omron, and glucose buddy are among the companies that are providing a health monitoring platform. All these brands are more than what they offer in a specific way. They make people’s lives more positive, easier, and deliver a better impact. Some of them are community driven creating a movement.

With a unique background in social, IoT, and elderly monitoring, the team has a good combination of technical and commercial understanding of the market. We understand both consumers as well as how the subscription model and platform monetization work. The combination of advertising revenue and hardware-AAS is something that the competitors have not worked on.

For most of the related products in the market, they are too emphasized in the "elderly" or "aging population", which turned out to be a caretaker monitoring whereby senior citizens don't feel comfortable using it due to self-ego or feel weak, therefore, refusing to be monitored. Intensive obligation and medical consultancy are required in those Apps.

Instead, We Care is a more lively and happy family platform, focus on strengthening family relationship, and is not restricted by certain age group (from preteens to their grandparents).

SaaS and Advertising from freemium users will be the key revenue models at the beginning of the business, followed by Enterprise in which we customize solutions for retirement villages and home care.

We have a TAM that covers global social media users, aged 18 and above. Smartphone users who are not new to social media.
We identify SAM within Asia (Eastern, Southeast, Southern), North America, Europe, and ANZ Region, social media users, age 18+.
Among the SAM, we target 5% of them, the busy adults who value the family relationship, especially with their aging parents, which is equivalent to 127 million users.

The total service obtainable market is estimated to be $2.6 billion a year, with a conservative estimation of ARPU of $20/year, and 1% of them are subscribers who pay $99 for SaaS.

Others

Wearables for the aging population are always being rejected by people. It is so inconvenient and challenging to persuade people to get on it.

However, smartphones have been becoming the best wearables nowadays! People go everywhere with their phones even a short distance from the living room to the toilet!

One of our surveys among friends showed that 77% of them agreed that their parents understood and felt the love and care towards them, yet 76% of them agreed that their parents would still like to have more attention and interactions from their family members.

Hey team

Interesting space! Few points:

  1. I'd try to emphasise how your product works and how it's different from a whatsapp group. Showing your prototype would be really useful here.
  2. I'd try to define clearly who you're targeting - it is adults and their elderly parents? or does it involve grandparents as well? That will help you define your modules and understand what are some of the the main day to day problems you are solving for these family units.
  3. Are you a superapp combining other solutions in the market you listed? Or do you plan to develop each one on your own?

Good luck!
